Why FTTH?
The reason for using optical fiber in place of copper wire or coaxial cable is simple. Fiber’s carrying capacity is huge. Today’s homeowner is demanding more and more bandwidth to meet their needs and traditional copper and coaxial networks are just not meeting the demand.
A single hair-thin optical fiber can carry up to 1000 times as much information as copper or coax, yet it is easy to install and maintain and extremely reliable in operation. Fiber can carry multiple voice, data, or video streams.
This has made FTTH the leading choice of service providers — the phone company for example — for bringing service into neighborhoods, where the signals could be broken out onto more traditional links, like copper for the “last mile” of their trip to the user.
